Leadership vs Control

There’s a difference between leadership… and control.
One of the fastest ways to create dysfunction in an organization is when leaders stop accepting critique.
Not because the critique is wrong—
But because it challenges their authority.
And that’s where the power struggle begins.

Instead of:
• Listening → we get defensiveness
• Problem-solving → we get posturing
• Progress → we get protection of ego
At that point, it’s no longer about doing what’s best for the organization.
It becomes about maintaining position.
Here’s the uncomfortable reality:
If feedback is only welcomed when it’s convenient…
It’s not a feedback culture. It’s a hierarchy protecting itself.
Strong leaders don’t see critique as a threat.
They see it as data.
Because the people closest to the problems often have the clearest view of the solutions.
But when that input is dismissed or ignored, two things happen:
Trust erodes
People stop speaking up
And when people stop speaking up, issues don’t disappear—
They compound quietly until they become crises.
The irony?
Leaders who avoid critique to maintain control often end up losing both.
Real leadership isn’t about being unchallenged.
It’s about being accountable.
So the question becomes:
Are you leading a team…
Or defending a position?
