Alabama and South Dakota have officially finalized legislation to join the Athletic Training Interstate Compact.
Alabama’s SB160 has been enacted, establishing participation in the compact and allowing licensed athletic trainers to practice across participating states without obtaining additional licenses.
South Dakota has followed suit, with HB1149 passed and signed into law—further expanding the reach and momentum of the compact nationwide.
So what does this actually mean?
• Increased mobility for athletic trainers
• Faster access to care for patients and athletes
• Reduced administrative burden across state lines
• Stronger alignment with modern healthcare workforce models
This isn’t just legislative progress—it’s professional evolution.
The Interstate Compact is quickly becoming one of the most important structural advancements in athletic training, especially as we navigate workforce shortages, emerging practice settings, and the need for scalable healthcare delivery models.
The question now is no longer if your state will join…
It’s when—and whether you’re ready when it happens.
