Do you embrace your conscious incompetence as a leader?

Great leaders are always evolving, moving through cycles of learning—not with the goal of becoming "the best," but to deepen their awareness. To truly grow, there needs to be a conscious effort to channel our inner beginner, even as we strive for expertise or mastery in our field.

However, as we gain knowledge and experience, we often shift into "expert mode." We start to think that having all the answers means we should stop questioning, exploring, or innovating. There’s a temptation to protect the image of being competent and successful, but that’s where growth can stall.

True leadership requires balancing that image of competence with the mindset of a beginner. It means stepping into the uncomfortable spaces where we don't have all the answers—embracing what’s often called unconscious incompetence.

The "fake it until you make it" approach doesn’t leave much room for genuine growth. It can lock us into old patterns and prevent us from being open to new information or refining our skills. But by embracing our conscious incompetence, we open the door to greater creativity and innovation.

Rather than always having the answers, a leader who is comfortable admitting they don’t know everything can ask better questions and invite others into the process of discovery. This openness creates opportunities for more collaborative problem-solving and encourages the team to explore new possibilities together.

When leaders present themselves as lifelong learners, they send a powerful message: it’s okay not to have all the answers, and growth happens in the discomfort of not knowing. This mindset fosters an environment where curiosity thrives, and true innovation can take root.
