Athletic Training needs to get Back to Basics

Athletic training doesn’t need more content.

It needs better mastery.

Somewhere along the way, we started equating:

➡️ More curriculum

➡️ More competencies

➡️ More exposure

With producing a better entry-level AT.

But what if we’ve been solving the wrong problem?

What if the real issue is:

• Not enough repetition

• Not enough clinical volume

• Not enough emphasis on “bread and butter” skills

The foundation of this profession has always been:

• Orthopedic evaluation

• Acute care decision-making

• Return-to-play progression

• Clear communication

Not surface-level familiarity across 15 domains.

Accreditation standards from CAATE will continue to evolve—and that’s necessary. But maybe the next evolution isn’t adding more.

Maybe it’s:

➡️ Prioritizing depth

➡️ Measuring consistency

➡️ Expecting true competence before progression

Because confidence in our profession starts with confidence in our fundamentals.
