Legislation news to keep an eye on: A proposal for Iowa school districts to have the option to hire athletic trainers in leu of the school nurse shortage.
House Study Bill 10 would add athletic trainers as an option for districts to hire in the position of a school nurse.

The bill has sparked opposition from those who emphasize the critical role nurses play in managing complex health needs. School nurses provide essential care, including administering medication for epilepsy, changing catheters, and supporting students with chronic health conditions—services vital for allowing students with special needs to attend school.
Nathan Newman president of the Iowa Athletic Trainers Society argues that athletic trainers are qualified to handle many health-related responsibilities. These include administering medication, managing seizures, addressing behavioral health concerns, giving immunizations, and assisting students with asthma.
The bill’s proponents highlight its potential benefits, particularly for rural Iowa schools struggling to fill nursing positions. Expanding staffing flexibility could help ensure students’ health and safety needs are met in areas facing significant challenges.
